PARISH AND TOWN - UK

In addition to parish registers, clergymen and parish officers created many other official records which, along with alms for the poor and the parish silver, were kept in a strong wooden box called the 'parish chest'.

These records included minutes of meetings of parish officials, apprenticeship records, rate books, poor relief expenditure books and papers about settlement and bastardy.

There were additional town records kept by local Justices of the Peace, local parish councils (the vestry), Churchwardens, Overseers of the Poor and, after 1834, Guardians of the Poor of local work houses.

This section has links to Sterry records located relating to such parish and town records.
